Picture

​Jayne Cole Southard (she/her) is a contemporary art historian and curator. She specializes in contemporary Chinese art in a transnational context. Her other research interests include urban-oriented contemporary art history, contemporary art methodologies, the intersection of art and sports, and art historical pedagogy. 

Jayne is currently a Lecturer at the City College of New York (CUNY). She previously taught courses in art history at the University of Oregon and the Hangzhou Academy of Art. 

Jayne has a wide-range of curatorial, museum, and gallery experience. She held positions at the Shanghai Museum, the Walker Art Center, and Groveland Gallery, among other venues. She recently co-curated Legacies: Asian American Art Movements in New York City (1969-2001) at NYU's 80WSE. 


Jayne holds a PhD in the History of Art and Architecture from the University of Oregon. She received her MA in Art History from  the University of St. Thomas (MN) and her BA in International Studies from Luther College, where she was also a DIII athlete. 

Jayne lives in Brooklyn, NY. Outside of academia, Jayne enjoys watching basketball and cycling, and is a competitive marathon runner. You can find her on Strava.
